How Paver Patios Are Installed: The Foundation of Durability

At McDonald Landscapes, we know the difference between a patio that looks great on install day and one that still looks great years later comes down to a complete, well-executed installation, not just the pavers you see on the surface.

From planning and layout to excavation, material selection, and finishing details, every step of the process plays a role in how a patio performs over time. When even one step is rushed or skipped, issues like settling, shifting, or drainage problems can follow.

That’s why our team follows a proven, start-to-finish approach to paver patio installation, treating your patio as a system, not a surface.

Step 1: Thoughtful Design & Planning

Every successful patio begins with a clear plan. Before any work begins, our team takes time to understand how the space will be used and how it should function long term.

During the planning phase, we carefully consider:

  • Patio size, shape, and placement
  • Paver style, color, and layout pattern
  • Proper slope for drainage (typically 1/8 inch per foot away from structures)
  • Border details and edge restraint requirements
  • Accurate material quantities to ensure consistency throughout the project

Once finalized, the patio footprint is marked with stakes and string lines to guide excavation and layout.

Step 2: Precise Excavation

Excavation sets the stage for everything that follows. We remove enough soil to accommodate the full patio system, not just the pavers themselves.

Most residential patios require space for:

  • 4-8 inches of base material (depending on soil conditions and intended use)
  • 1 inch of bedding sand
  • 2-3 inches of paver thickness

For a typical backyard patio, this means excavating approximately 6-8 inches of soil. We excavate down to firm, undisturbed ground to reduce the risk of settling over time.

Before moving on, the exposed subgrade is compacted to create a stable starting point.

Step 3: Installing a Stable Base

A properly installed base is a key component of patio performance, but it’s only effective when installed correctly.

We use a crushed stone aggregate base designed for strength and drainage. This material compacts tightly while allowing water to move through, helping the patio resist movement and weather-related stress.

The base is installed in thin, controlled layers (typically about 2 inches at a time) with each layer compacted thoroughly. This ensures even density throughout the patio and helps prevent weak spots that can lead to future issues.

Step 4: Precision Leveling with Bedding Sand

Once the base is complete, a 1-inch layer of coarse bedding sand is spread over the surface. This layer allows for fine adjustments that ensure the patio is level and visually consistent.

Using screed rails and straightedges, our installers create a smooth, uniform surface. While this layer isn’t structural, its consistency is critical for even paver placement and long-term performance.

Step 5: Expert Paver Installation

With the foundation prepared, the pavers are placed by hand in the chosen pattern, starting from a fixed reference point to maintain straight lines and proper alignment.

Built-in spacer lugs or joint gaps help ensure consistent spacing throughout the patio. As the layout takes shape:

  • Edge restraints are installed to lock the patio in place
  • Pavers are cut as needed for borders, curves, and transitions

Attention to detail at this stage ensures the finished patio looks intentional, balanced, and professionally crafted.

Step 6: Final Compaction & Joint Finishing

Once all pavers are in place, the entire surface is compacted using a plate compactor with a protective rubber pad. This step helps settle the pavers evenly into the bedding sand.

Next, polymeric joint sand is swept into the joints and activated with a light mist of water. When cured, it:

  • Locks pavers together
  • Reduces weed growth
  • Helps deter ants and joint erosion

This final step ties the entire system together.

Built the McDonald Landscapes Way

At McDonald Landscapes, paver patios are installed with purpose, from the first stake in the ground to the final sweep of joint sand. Our team focuses on doing every step right, because long-term performance depends on the entire process working together.

The result is a patio that not only enhances your outdoor space today, but continues to look and function beautifully for years to come.
